Zhiping Yu graduated from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1967 with B.S. degree. He received his M.S. and Ph. D degrees from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, U.S.A. in 1980, and 1985, respectively.

He is presently the Novellus Microelectronics Professor at the Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China . He has been associated with Stanford for about 30 years, both as graduate student and researcher. Starting from 2008, he has an appointment in EE Dept. as visiting professor. He returned to Tsinghua full time since Sept. 2002 and holds Pericom Microelectronics Professorship (2002-2004) established by Pericom Semiconductor Corp. in San Jose, U.S. His research interests include device simulation for nano-scale MOSFETs, quantum transport in nanoelectronic devices, compact circuit modeling of passive and active components in RF CMOS, and numerical analysis techniques.

Prof. Yu has published more than 250 technical papers and is the co-author of a book on TCAD (Technology CAD) in English. He co-authored a book on RF CMOS circuit design (in Chinese), which was published by Tsinghua University Press and won the 1st-class award from Tsinghua in 2008. He has extensive consulting experience with major IC/computer companies, including HP (with HP Labs for ten years), TSMC, and Cypress Semiconductor in the Silicon Valley . He was one of the chief architects for the IC-CAD system called Panda in China in 1980s. The project won the National First Prize for Science and Technology Advancement in 1993. He currently leads several research projects founded by grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology in China (973 and 863 Plans) and from National Science Foundation in China .

Prof. Yu serves IEEE society extensively. He is an IEEE Fellow and a member of IEEE EDS Nanotechnology Committee, and was the Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. CAD of IC & Systems (ICCAD) from 1996 to 2005. He has also co-founded several EDA and design companies, both in the Silicon Valley and in China.
